Yakima Valley Lives Rebuilt
The Central Washington Home Builders Association membership (CWHBA) is working together to completely remodel the house of a local 61-year old Grandmother, Julie Cruz. This is the story of a unique woman who despite many tragedies in her own life, and subpar living conditions, continually reaches out to help others in the community. The story of Cruz exemplifies the mission of the CWHBA: "Building and Supporting Our Communities Since 1955."

CWHBA Supports Children’s Village Expansion Project
Children’s Village: The CWHBA Board of Directors pledged $50,000 (over 5 years) to support the new Children’s Village Expansion Project. Children’s Village is a unique facility which provides special needs children and their families with nearly every imaginable healthcare service possible, all under one roof. The Children’s Village Expansion Project will include a new Community Autism Center of Excellence, expansion of the pediatric medical specialty exam areas and dental operatories, and provide for additional pediatric therapy programming for speech, physical and occupational therapy. These facility and service additions will greatly reduce the time families must wait to get into the necessary clinics.

Evan Mettie Project
CWHBA members took on a project for the family of a wounded soldier. Army Specialist Evan Mettie grew up in Selah and joined the Army after graduating from high school in 2002. He was assigned to the Army’s A Troop, 133rd Cavalry, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division and stationed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. During his second deployment to Iraq, Evan was injured by a car bomb and suffered severe head injury. After he was flown back to the states, the 22 year old soldier went through multiple surgeries in a number of hospitals across the country.
Evan was moved back to Yakima in October 2007 where he moved into the Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital’s Garden Village for daily treatment. The doctors at Memorial believed his remaining communications skills were sufficient to build upon to prepare him to eventually move home. In order for Evan to make that move a significant remodel to the family home was called for. CWHBA member builder Mark Helms was hired by the family to construct an addition and remodel much of the existing house. Because of the tremendous financial burden already borne by the family, Mark Helms committed to provide his services without charge. This is where the CWHBA became involved.
The association was able to solicit donations of materials and labor from the membership and the community at large to significantly reduce the cost burden to the family. Members were eager to help out the family and make it possible for Evan to move home. The project is nearly completed and Evan should be home soon.

Angel Tree
The Central Washington Home Builders Association has teamed up with the Salvation Army during the holidays to help make Christmas wishes come true for children and families less fortunate. An "Angel Tree" is set up in the lobby of the CWHBA Office each year and our membership makes a special effort to provide something for each child represented on the “Angel Tree”.
That same year CWHBA also sponsored two families for Christmas, providing them with complete Christmas dinners and gifts for their children. Our effort to assist local families through the Angel Tree program has continued to grow each year, and we plan to continue what has become a giving tradition for the Association.

Boy Scouts Gain New Residence for Ranger
Camp Fife: The CWHBA committed to take on its most ambitious community service project to date. Association members provided materials and labor to construct a new residence for the ranger stationed at the Boy Scouts of America CAMP FIFE. This regional scout camp is located at Goose Prairie, off Hwy 410 near Bumping Lake on Chinook Pass. The distance to the project site coupled with the harsh winter weather conditions made this a challenging project to say the least. The project was completed in 2007.

Habitat for Humanity Blitz House
During the 10-day Central Washington State Fair, members of the CWHBA built a 1,038 square foot home. The home was built in a special place on the fairgrounds and was a big hit with the fair-goers. Many hours of planning, scheduling and building went into making this project a huge success. The Corona family was most appreciative when the keys to the home were handed over on the last day of the fair.
Remodeling on Parade
Remodeling on Parade started in 1992. The Parade is allows members of the public to visit recently remodeled homes so they can see firsthand the quality and attention to detail CWHBA’s member remodelers put into their work. Funds raised by this event through entry fees and ticket sales help support CWHBA, the Remodelers Council Scholarship Fund and local charities such as the YWCA Women’s Shelter.
